VANCOUVER - The thirteenth running of the French Dressing Jeanswear Women's 8K took place on Sunday, September 8. Between the 8K portion of the event, which celebrates the strengths of women, and the 4K Walk that attracts both men and women, nearly 1,200 people participated this year. Participants raced, ran, jogged, walked or strolled the scenic course through Queen Elizabeth Park and surrounding area. Everyone enjoyed the post-race festivities under sunny skies at Nat Bailey Stadium.
Leah Pells, an Olympic athlete from Coquitlam, took first place once again this year with a time of 29:28. This, just two months after giving birth to her first son Luke! In second place was Karen Timewell at 30:09, Lori Druward finished 3rd at 31:08, and Miranda Zilm finished 4th at 31:18. Buzz Bishop from Z95.3 FM was there to MC the festivities.
Committed to making a difference, participants in the French Dressing Jeanswear Women's 8K raised pledges to support breast cancer research through the BC Cancer Foundation. This year, the event raised over $65,000. In honour of Daisy Dusangh, a former 8K participant who lost a courageous battle with breast cancer at the age of twenty-seven, the French Dressing Jeanswear Women's 8K presented the team that raised the most pledge money with the Daisy's Hope Memorial Trophy. Organizers were pleased to present this year's trophy to a group of 120 family members and friends of Daisy's who called themselves "Team Daisy's Hope" and collected $15,029.
Event organizers and the BC Cancer Foundation thank all sponsors, participants, volunteers, and pledge donors for making the event such a success.
